He is a director of the IP law firm, Bouwers Inc., and head of its Patents & Designs Dept. (since 2004).
Theo is a chemical and metallurgical engineer. He is also a qualified patent attorney and admitted to the High Court of South Africa. He is furthermore a member of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces (SA), a fellow of the South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law (SAIIPL), a past board member and President of the South African Licensing Executives Society (LESSA) and a member of the International Federation of Patent Agents (FICPI), the International Licensing Executives Society (LESI) and of INTA.
Theo has more than 30 years’ experience in technology and patent related matters and is recognized as an expert in these fields. He has extensive experience in the procurement, protection, enforcement and commercialisation of intellectual property (IP) in both South Africa and internationally, including IP related research and development projects, patenting, litigation, due diligence investigations, negotiations and transactions, taxation, valuations, damages quantification and exchange control issues, as well as technology based, engineering and construction agreements.
He has further assisted numerous private and public entities, including state owned enterprises and tertiary institutions, such as the Department of Science and Technology (“DST”) the South African Bureau of Standards (“SABS”), the Technology Innovation Agency (“TIA”) and the National Intellectual Property Management Office (“NIPMO”), with IP related matters, including the drafting, interpretation and implementation of the IPR Act, the TIA Act, and their regulations.
Theo represents various blue chip companies and governments in IP related matters.
